CS 1.6 lags in smoke: how to fix FPS drops
Updated 2026-11-02
You look at a smoke grenade - and the game turns into a slideshow. This is not the server and not your internet: the FPS on your PC drops. It is easy to fix, usually with one launch option.

Why the game lags in smoke
A smoke cloud in CS 1.6 is made of dozens of semi-transparent sprites. Behind each of them the graphics card redraws the same pixels again and again. The bigger the cloud on the screen, the more work. It gets worse when:
- anti-aliasing (MSAA) is on - the Steam version of CS 1.6 enables it by default and it multiplies the work;
- the game runs on built-in graphics (Intel, AMD on a laptop) instead of the real graphics card;
- the resolution is high - more pixels to redraw;
- several smokes overlap - common in CSDM, where grenades can be bought often.
Check that it is FPS
Open the console (~) and type net_graph 3. Look into the smoke: if fps falls and ping,
loss and choke stay the same, the problem is your PC and this guide will help. If ping, loss or choke jump, read
CS 1.6 lag: ping, loss and choke.
Launch options: -nomsaa and -nofbo
This is the main fix. In Steam: right-click Counter-Strike → Properties → Launch options, and add:
-nomsaa
-nomsaa turns off anti-aliasing. Edges become a little sharper, but the FPS in smoke usually goes back to normal.
If it did not help enough, add a second option:
-nomsaa -nofbo
-nofbo makes the game draw the picture the old, simpler way. On some PCs it breaks the picture (black screen,
wrong brightness) - then remove it and keep only -nomsaa. Restart the game after changing launch options.
Video settings
- Options → Video → Renderer: OpenGL. Software and D3D modes are much slower.
- Lower the resolution. 1280×720 or 1024×768 gives a big boost on weak graphics.
- Turn off vertical sync:
gl_vsync 0. - Limit FPS:
fps_max 100- the game is smoother and the card does not overheat. - Turn off anisotropic filtering:
gl_ansio 0(if the console says "unknown command", skip it). - Play in fullscreen, not in a window.
To keep the commands, write them into userconfig.cfg in the cstrike folder. The whole config
is in the guide best CS 1.6 settings and config.
Laptop: use the right graphics card
Laptops often start old games on the weak built-in graphics. Tell Windows to use the real card for CS 1.6:
- Windows 10/11: Settings → System → Display → Graphics → add
hl.exefrom the game folder → Options → High performance. - NVIDIA: NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D settings → Program settings →
hl.exe→ High-performance NVIDIA processor. - Plug in the charger and choose the High performance power plan. On battery the card slows down.
Graphics driver settings
- Update the driver from the NVIDIA, AMD or Intel website. Old drivers often have OpenGL problems.
- In the driver panel, do not force anti-aliasing, FXAA or MFAA for the game: set them to "Application-controlled" or "Off". Forced anti-aliasing makes smoke much heavier.
- Close what loads the PC in the background: a browser with video, streaming, downloads.
What not to do
Do not download "no smoke" configs, files or programs. Removing or thinning smoke gives an advantage and is considered a cheat - you can get banned for it. The settings in this guide only make the game faster and are allowed everywhere.
If after all the steps the game still lags in smoke on our server, write about it on the forum:
your graphics card, resolution and the fps from net_graph 3 in smoke.
Frequently asked questions
Why does CS 1.6 lag in smoke?
A smoke cloud is made of dozens of semi-transparent sprites. The graphics card has to draw every pixel behind them many times, and anti-aliasing (MSAA) multiplies this work. Weak and built-in graphics cannot keep up, so FPS drops.
What launch option fixes lag in smoke?
Add -nomsaa to the CS 1.6 launch options in Steam. It turns off anti-aliasing, which is the main cause of FPS drops in smoke. If it is not enough, try -nofbo as well.
Is it allowed to remove smoke in CS 1.6?
No. Configs, files or programs that remove or thin smoke are considered cheats. Fix the performance instead - the settings in this guide are allowed everywhere.
