Best CS 1.6 settings: a config for high FPS, smooth aim and no lag
Updated 2026-09-26
Counter-Strike 1.6 runs on almost any PC, but wrong settings make it feel slow: stuttering, a "floaty" mouse, shots that do not register. Here is a tested config for high, stable FPS and smooth online play, with a short explanation of every line so you know what you change.
The config to copy
These values fit most players with a normal home internet connection (cable, fiber, good DSL):
// network
rate 100000
cl_updaterate 101
cl_cmdrate 101
ex_interp 0.01
cl_lc 1
cl_lw 1
// fps and video
fps_max 100
gl_vsync 0
// mouse
m_rawinput 1
// show fps, ping, loss and choke
net_graph 3
Weak or mobile internet? Use these network values instead - they send less data and give less choke on a slow line:
rate 25000
cl_updaterate 60
cl_cmdrate 60
ex_interp 0.02
Network settings explained
| Command | What it does | Value |
|---|---|---|
rate | How much data per second the server may send you. Too low - "choke" and jerky enemies. | 100000 |
cl_updaterate | How many updates per second you get from the server. More - enemies move smoother and more exactly. | 101 |
cl_cmdrate | How many times per second you send your actions (movement, shots) to the server. | 101 |
ex_interp | Interpolation - how far "in the past" other players are drawn. Low value - hitboxes match the models better. | 0.01 |
cl_lc / cl_lw | Lag compensation and local weapon prediction. Must be on (1), otherwise shots feel delayed. | 1 |
The server decides the upper limit. On Balagun it is sv_maxrate 100000 and sv_maxupdaterate 102,
so the config above uses everything the server can give. Setting higher values than the server allows does nothing.
Do not set ex_interp lower than 1 / cl_updaterate (0.01 for 101, 0.017 for 60) - the game will raise it anyway.
FPS and video settings
fps_max 100- the standard for CS 1.6. The game physics (jumps, speed) are made for it, and it is stable on any server. Values above 100 needfps_override 1; they can slightly change movement, and many servers limit them.gl_vsync 0- vertical sync off. With vsync the mouse feels delayed.- Video mode: Options → Video → OpenGL (not Software), your monitor's native resolution.
- Laptop: plug in the charger and choose the "High performance" power plan in Windows, and make sure the game runs on the dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA Control Panel / AMD Software → hl.exe → high-performance GPU).
- Close browsers with video, streaming and recording programs if the FPS drops - CS 1.6 needs little, but it is sensitive to stutters.
Mouse settings
m_rawinput 1- the game reads the mouse directly, without Windows acceleration. Aim becomes the same every time.- In Windows, turn off "Enhance pointer precision" (Mouse settings → Additional mouse options → Pointer Options) - it is mouse acceleration.
- Choose
sensitivityso that a full turn (360°) takes a comfortable mouse movement - usually 1.5-3 at 800 DPI.
Steam launch options
In Steam: right-click Counter-Strike → Properties → Launch options. Useful ones:
-freq 144 -nojoy
-freq 144- screen refresh rate (put your monitor's value: 60, 75, 144, 165...).-nojoy- turns off joystick support, a bit less work for the game.
How to save it
- Open the
cstrikefolder (Steam: right-click Counter-Strike → Manage → Browse local files). - Create the file
userconfig.cfg(notuserconfig.cfg.txt- turn on file extensions in Explorer to check). - Paste the config, save and restart the game. The file runs at every start, so the settings are not lost.
Add your binds to the same file - see binds and commands.
How to check that it works
Join a server and look at net_graph 3: FPS should stay near 100, loss and choke near 0.
If you still have lag, read how to fix lag, ping, loss and choke.
Try it on our server: 57.131.192.149:27015 - open the console (~) and type connect 57.131.192.149:27015.
Frequently asked questions
What are the best rate settings for CS 1.6?
For a normal home connection: rate 100000, cl_updaterate 101, cl_cmdrate 101, ex_interp 0.01. On a weak or mobile connection use rate 25000, cl_updaterate 60, cl_cmdrate 60, ex_interp 0.02.
What fps_max should I use in CS 1.6?
fps_max 100 is the safe standard: stable, and the game physics work as intended. Higher values need fps_override 1 and can slightly change movement, and some servers do not allow them.
How do I show FPS and ping in CS 1.6?
Type net_graph 3 in the console. It shows FPS, ping, loss and choke in the corner of the screen. net_graph 0 hides it.
Where do I put my CS 1.6 config?
Put the commands into userconfig.cfg in the cstrike folder. The game runs this file every time it starts, so your settings are not lost.
