Common CS 1.6 errors and how to fix them

Most Counter-Strike 1.6 errors have a simple cause and a fix that takes a minute. Find your error message below - each one has why it happens and what to do. The messages are shown in English, exactly as the game prints them.

First aid: three steps that fix most problems

1. Restart Steam completely (Steam → Exit, then start it again) and make sure you are online.
2. Verify the game files: in Steam right-click Counter-Strike → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam replaces damaged files.
3. Reset your config: in the cstrike folder rename config.cfg to config_old.cfg. The game creates a clean one at the next start (your userconfig.cfg is kept).

Connection errors

STEAM validation rejected

Why: the server could not confirm your Steam login.

• Make sure Steam is running and you are online (not in offline mode).
• The same Steam account must not be playing on another PC at the same time.
• Restart Steam and connect again. If it repeats, verify the game files.

Server is full

Why: all player slots are taken.

• Wait a minute and try again - on a busy server slots free up all the time.
• Add the server to your favorites so you can reconnect in one click: server browser → Favorites → Add a server.

Bad server address

Why: the address is written wrong.

• Use the format IP:port without spaces, for example connect 57.131.192.149:27015.
• Check that you did not copy extra characters (a dot or space at the end).

Server is not responding / endless "Retrying"

Why: the game does not get an answer from the server.

• Check the address and see if the server is online in the server browser.
• Allow hl.exe in the Windows firewall and in your antivirus.
• Restart the router. If other servers work, the server may be restarting - try again in a few minutes.

Server uses a different/newer protocol version

Why: your game version does not match the server version (usually an old non-Steam build).

• Update the game. The Steam version is updated automatically - verify the game files if the error stays.

Reliable channel overflowed

Why: too much data had to be sent at once and the connection was reset, often during map load.

• Simply reconnect: type retry in the console.
• Use normal network settings (rate 100000, cl_updaterate 101) - see the best settings and config.

Missing or broken files

Mod_LoadModel: models/... not found or ... has wrong version number

Why: a map, model or sound that the server uses is missing on your PC or was downloaded broken.

1. Make sure downloads are allowed: cl_allowdownload 1 in the console.
2. Find the file named in the error in the cstrike or cstrike_downloads folder and delete it.
3. Reconnect - the game downloads a fresh copy from the server.

The map or sounds download very slowly

Why: some servers send files through the game connection. Just wait until the download finishes - it happens only once per file.

The game does not start or crashes

Could not set video mode, black screen or wrong resolution

Why: the saved resolution is not supported by your monitor or driver.

• Set Steam launch options -w 1280 -h 720 -window, start the game, choose a working resolution in Options → Video, then remove the options.
• Update the graphics card driver.

Crash on start or when joining a server

• Do the three first aid steps: restart Steam, verify files, reset config.cfg.
• Close overlays and programs that hook into games (recording, FPS counters, "boosters").
• If the crash happens on one map only, delete that map from cstrike_downloads\maps and let it download again.
